Our very own Indian Razzies, the Golden Kela Awards, celebrate Bollywood’s ‘Cream of the Crap/Worst performances’. The awards are given out every year. This year, Cyrus Broacha, in his own inimitable style, hosted the function organised by Jatin Varma, and gave out the awards. But, the Kelas failed to convince many on certain counts.
For one, the male lead actor, Shah Rukh Khan, got one for ‘My Name is Khan’. This was strange, since the movie had won critical acclaim from the industry and audience alike. It must have dampened the celebrations for SRK, who is attending the wedding of Gauri’s cousin in Delhi. Even an acclaimed film like ‘Guzaarish’ got the Back Award for Emotional Blackmail and its Sanjay Leela Bhansali was named the worst director. ‘Dabangg’, the 2010 blockbuster, bagged the Ajooba Award for Sheer Awesomeness. However, amongst the rightful contenders, was Sonam Kapoor, who got it for the worst female actor for ‘Aisha’.
An indication about the acceptance of this award function by Bollywood personalities was the presence of a few industry-wallahs at the venue. The industry had been avoiding this function like plague for the last two years. Those present included Vishal Bhardwaj, Abhishek Chaubey (who directed ‘Ishqiya’), Habib Faisal, director of ‘Do Dooni Chaar’, Pradhuman Singh aka Noora/Bin Laden from ‘Tere ... Bin Laden’ and others. Their reason: Bollywood should be open enough to take the brickbats with the bouquets.
