Actress Minisha Lamba and Bipasha Basu have been in news for evading or trying to evade customs duty. Now it’s the turn of 23 year old newbie star Anushka Sharma. The young actress has been on a high ever since her super hit movie ‘Baand Baaja Baraat’ released in theatres this year.
She got into trouble while returning to Mumbai from the glittering IIFA award 2011 function held at Toronto. Anushka Sharma was held for questioning by the custom officials as she was found carrying 35 lakhs worth undeclared gold and diamond jewellery.
The ‘Baand Baaja Baraat’ star landed at 2.30 pm at the Mumbai airport yesterday and was let off by the Custom authorities well past midnight after 9 hours of questioning.
Anushka Sharma defended carrying so much of jewellery with her by saying that this was her own personal jewellery that she had declared while flying out from Mumbai so the question of paying a duty does not arise. The actress has submitted the relevant documents and the customs officials are verifying her claim.
The Customs Commissioner P M Govande told PTI that the actress may be called in for further questioning if needed.
